Heriot UK have submitted a revised planning application to Basildon Borough Council for the redevelopment of the former Co-op site, Wickford, and would like to hear your views on the new proposal.

The Development

This proposal presents an exciting opportunity to revitalise Wickford Town Centre, delivering a vibrant mixed-use development that will significantly improve the shopping experience for the local community.

The plans include a 4-storey contemporary building featuring a major supermarket retailer on the ground floor. Lease negotiations between Heriot UK and the retailer are now nearing completion, with updates to follow shortly. Above the supermarket, the building will accommodate 72 carefully designed apartments and a large residential amenity area. The proposals also include the regrading, reconfiguration and resurfacing of the existing Council-owned car park, incorporating new parent-and-child, accessible, and EV parking bays, alongside additional tree planting.

The detailed design process with Basidlon Council has resulted in a proposal that, despite economic challenges, enhances the design of the local area, improves pedestrian connections to the town centre, integrates footpaths with green spaces (existing ‘green corridors’), upgrades street lighting, improves wayfinding, and adds greenery and amenity space to the site’s public realm. The scheme has also reduced the building’s scale from the originally proposed 7 storeys to 4 storeys. For further details please see the attached summary plans under the ‘Documentation’ section.

Overall, this development will provide:

• New housing in a sustainable location
